The new Shetland Musuem & Archives opened on 31st May 2007 and Spencie was commissioned to compose a tune for the occasion. It is played here by Steven Spence on fiddle, Alice Mullay on piano and Jonathan Ritch on guitar & bass.
BBC Radio Shetland has recently been celebrating it’s 40th year. Back in 1977 when Radio Shetland began, Steven composed a tune to mark the occasion which was used as the signature tune for one week. This was the second tune Steven had ever composed! Below is a track from the “Shetland Fiddlers Vol 2” LP (recorded in 1978) where 13 year old Steven Spence and 10 year old Debbie Scott play three tunes: Debbie’s Reel, Ruby’s Success (the first tune Steven ever composed), Radio Shetland.
‘Calum’s Waltz’ was originally composed for the birth of Calum Risk in 1992.
Calum unfortunately suffered from a rare muscle disorder from a very young age, but despite his difficulties and deteriorating health he was a very happy young man who’s big smile touched the hearts of many people over the years. Sadly Calum passed away on 14th August 2016 at the age of 24.
This is a recording of the tune which was done as a special tribute in memory of Calum and included in ‘Spencie’s Tunes Vol 6’.
