Alice MullayAlice Mullay

Alice Mullay comes from Bigton, Shetland and has so far had a very active and varied musical life. She won both the Senior and Junior Shetland Young Musician of the Year competitions before heading to Edinburgh University where she gained a first class honours degree in music (1999). Alice has a particular interest in Music in the Community and was awarded a special prize for her work in schools, residential homes, with adults with special needs and with war-affected children in Mostar, Bosnia.

Alice’s first instrument is piano and she has performed in many different contexts from solo concerto to accompanying folk music. In 2001 Alice travelled to Banff, Canada and enjoyed a winter residency at the Centre for Performing Arts. Alice has also composed and arranged a number of scores for theatre. Indeed, she has always been keen to collaborate with other musicians and experiment with different art forms. In 2000, Alice completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and has since combined a career of education work, music workshops, performing and organising creative music projects in the Shetland community. She and Jonathan have worked together on a number of schools projects involving original compositions, recordings and multi-media presentations. She is currently the music teacher at the Baltasound Junior High School, Unst where she and Jonathan have set up the Big Jangly Hut Studio.
